“Residuals are a right, not a luxury” — Actress, Beverly Osu backs Omotola Jalade as she sparks new debate about Nollywood’s broken system

“Residuals are a right, not a luxury” — Actress, Beverly Osu backs Omotola Jalade as she sparks new debate about Nollywood’s broken system

Actress Beverly Osu is not here for the silence or the excuses and this time, she’s speaking up loud and clear.

In a recent IG story, Beverly reacted to a post made by Nollywood veteran Omotola Jalade-Ekeinde, who shared a shocking comparison between her career earnings in Hollywood versus Nollywood.

Omotola revealed that despite spending just 4 years in Hollywood and doing only 2 test projects, she receives monthly residual payments. Meanwhile, after 30 years in Nollywood with over 310 projects, she gets nothing; no residuals, no royalties, just the memory of work done.

She backed the post with receipts literally. Two SAG-AFTRA pay slips from Hollywood showing proof of her monthly earnings.

While many reacted with mixed feelings, some praising her for opening up, others accusing her of unfair comparisons, Beverly Osu cut through the noise with a bold, articulate response.

“What Omotola posted is not about comparison of nations. It’s about the basic dignity of the artist,” she wrote.

She made it clear that this wasn’t about the usual “first world vs third world” talk, this was about value, structure, and respect.

“Art is art. Work is work. Labor is labor. Residuals are a right, not a luxury,” she continued.

And she didn’t stop there. Beverly called out the lazy argument that Nigerians should stop comparing Hollywood to Nollywood.

“Saying ‘don’t compare 1st world to 3rd world’ is a lazy argument that keeps us trapped.”

According to her, artists, whether in America, Nigeria, or anywhere else, deserve to earn even after the cameras stop rolling. It’s not just about now; it’s about sustainability.
